The Civic Society, together with the Botanic Gardens Action Group, is trying to revive the Churchtown Fair.
This was originally held on fields between Manor Road and Bibby Road. It was held in August on a date associated with 'Big Bathing Sunday'. This was an occassion when people from the surrounding areas would travel to Church Town to bathe in the sea. This was the start of South Hawes later Southport becoming a seaside resort.
The fair was not held after the Second World War uintil the Society and the Churchtown Traders revived it some years ago. Then it was held in Botanic Road and the Church green. It stopped being held when the Council started charging for Policing and closing roads.
This time we are trying to get it held in the Botanic Gardens on the Bank Holiday Saturday, Aug 29th.
We want to invite Charities, voluntary Organisations or Groups to promote themselves to the public by setting up their stalls. Instead of making a charge for this we want the organisations to host, sponsor, organise and event especially for the children.
This could be  a race, a tug of war, a skill competition or something similar.

Unfortunately we have had to cancel our plans to try to revive the ancient Churchtown Fair.  We have had very few responses to our request for other organisations to join us. Most have quoted the fact that it is a holiday time and their organisation does not meet during the Schools main holiday period so they cannot organise anything.
We will have to go back to the drawing board to see if there is another way to revive the Fair.

Dare I suggest that planning for a 2010 Fair starts now so groups have plenty of time to get organise themselves?

Looking at alternative venues for the Fair for 2010.
The restrictions/ red tape to organise anything in Botanic Gardens is a drain on the organisation.  Looking at Marshside Methodist Church Field or Stanley High school Field even though they are not in Churchtown they are in North Meols.
If anyone is associated with a voluntary organisation or charity group I would like to hear from them if they would be interested in taking part in August 2010.

I am sure The Rimmer FHS would love to be part of the special day!   Would Crossens Recreation Ground be a possibility and maybe the Community Centre could be used as well (tea, coffee, biscuit, etc)?
